Michael Jackson's This Is It - A Genius at Work
"This Is It" was created for genuine Michael Jackson fans everywhere. In this documentary that chronicled Michael's rehearsals from April 2009 to June 2009, it was both unfamiliar and enlivening to see Michael Jackson from the perspective of being a real person instead of the mega-icon and legend he was.
The fans are used to getting a polished, finished product in reference to MJ's performance. "This Is It" portrays MJ's music from behind the curtains and allows the audience to witness his music in the making.
Michael Jackson extracted the highest possible potential from his cast. At times, he was considerably demanding, being the perfectionist that he was, but he did it with grace and diplomacy. He would not take less than what he was demanding. The best part is that his cast wanted to impart all of their fervor, all their love and all they had to MJ's demand for excellence.
He was modest and personable yet he was a great commander. In MJ's rehearsal, notwithstanding the fact that fans had seen all the famed videos including "Billie Jean," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Thriller" and" Beat It," MJ was still able to seize what the audience had repeatedly seen before and reinvent an interesting new spin on stage.
Not only was MJ a visionary, he knew exactly what he wanted out of the songs his musicians performed. Note by note, MJ gave guidance and direction while he triumphantly demonstrated that he was a veritable artist in his own right. By that, I mean he knew how the music should come together. When he gave a definition of a single measure of music, his performers would reinterpret it and create this effect that was astounding.
Additionally, Michael Jackson was intimately acquainted with every aspect of his music. The entertainers were awe-inspired by his performance, although the daily grind of practice existed, which was related to being in the salt mines as they perfected every nuance of his music along with all the blunders that accompanied it.
As MJ crafted every note and every move, the performers who are professionals themselves, gladly heeded Michael's every instruction. They executed the vision MJ delineated in his instruction to them. They were enchanted to be receiving hands-on training from the great Michael himself.
It was astounding that after a few performances, the audience in the theatre would emphatically applaud MJ's creativity and genius each time a song ended.
Seeing MJ's genius at work imparts an appreciation for everything MJ has given in his music. His vision was always to please his fans and give more than what was required. He worked arduously to deliver. This farewell tribute to MJ expressed a glimpse of the passion and the splendor that he possessed in his glory years.
Although "This Is It" depicted MJ's gaffes in his music, he did not always deliver "the goods" in the way he executed his singing. Michael Jackson still had great singing talent but was slightly diminished.
However, it was nice to hear his voice in melody despite the fluctuation in quality at times.
For the true MJ fan that is not critical and can embrace the other side of MJ's performance as a work in progress for the final tour, "This Is It" illustrates MJ's practice sessions in a way we never get to see.
It was terrific to see MJ chewing gum and consuming a lollipop....just all the little things one would not see otherwise because of his awesomeness as a consummate performer and entertainer.
MJ had a great love for the earth and the environment. "This is it" portrays the "earth girl," Jazmine Alvaran, who stole your heart in a scene of the "Earth Song" depicting the lush, green foliage of the forest with butterflies flying in a magical way. After a brief time of peaceful enjoyment in the forest, the earth girl falls asleep in serenity on a mound of leaves. Finally, after the credits had gone by, she holds the earth in her hands with a communique to heal the world.
After the momentous portrayal of the earth girl, Michael Jackson performed "Man in the Mirror" which reinforced the message of coming together and healing the world. As the credits began to scroll, the song "This Is It" added the final touch to the entire documentary piece inciting the feeling of a last "good-bye."
"This Is It" movie release date was October 28th, and will have a two-week run. I adjure all Michael Jackson fans to see this film on the silver screen in order to do it proper justice. The experience simply will not be the same watching it on DVD.
